Time to shine: SBŠ Ostrava and Nyon Basket to play for gold

The 2025 European Women`s Basketball league final between SBŠ Ostrava and Nyon Basket will take place on Wednesday, March 12, at the Hala Ostravska Univerzita in Ostrava, eastern Czechia. Tipoff at 17.00 Central European time.


Series history: SBŠ Ostrava will face Nyon Basket for the third time.


SBŠ Ostrava defeated Nyon Basket, 88-76, on Sunday, October 27, at Ostrava.


Nyon Basket took revenge, 94-77, on Friday, January 10, at the Centre sportif du Rocher.


SBŠ Ostrava posted a 5-1 record and finished first in the regular season.


Nyon Basket finished second with a 4-2 record after a 0-2 start.


Both teams will play for the EWBL trophy for the first time.


Leaders

Adela Smutna (Northwest College 2021) leads SBŠ Ostrava with 13.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.


Oliana Squires (Montana State University 2021) averages 11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.


Iva Beloševič (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) averages 9.9 points and 7.7 rebounds.


Nikola Kovačikova has 7.6 points and 3.5 assists.


Samantha Breen (University of Massachusetts 2023) averages 22.1 points and 13.8 rebounds for Nyon Basket.


Ukraine international Miriam Uro-Nilie has 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds.


Naomi Takyi has 7.9 points and 5.3 assists, while Laure Margot averages 11.9 points.


Shannon Coffee (Stanford 2019) played for Nyon from October 2024 until January 2025.


Keira Robinson (Virginia Commonwealth University 2017) joined team in January 2025.



National championships

SBŠ Ostrava are 11-9 at the Chance ŽBL.


Ostrava is in the fourth position behind EurLeague Women teams USK Praha (21-0) and Žabiny Brno (17-4) as well as KP Brno (13-7).


SBŠ Ostrava played at the Central European Women`s League (CEWL) Final Four tournament on March 8-9.


Ostrava defeated Sokol Hradec Kralove in a semifinal game, 86-78, and lost to multiple EWBL champion Peter Jankovič and Pieštanske Čajky in a final, 69-81.


Nyon Basket are 15-2 at the Swiss Basketball league Women, including 14-2 in the Stage One.


All teams were split in two groups recently (1-5 and 6-9).


Nyon Basket are on a seven game winning streak in 2025 and won at Troistorrents-Chablais, 88-59, on March 1.

FINALISTS

SBŠ Ostrava: seventh year in the league, starting from 2018. Best results: qualified to the 2022 Final Four and finished in the fourth place; sixth place in 2023; posted a 2-2 record in 2024. Iveta Rašková is the head coach from 2020.


Nyon Basket: first year in the league. Women`s basketball club was founded in 1950. Nyon system has nine teams, including six youth teams. Title case: five Swiss championships (1973, 1979, 1984, 2018, 2019), two Swiss cups (1979, 1984), Swiss Supercup (2024); vice-champions 2022-2024. Loan Morand is the head coach from 2024.


BIG PICTURE

Czechia is one of four Women`s EuroBasket 2025 hosting countries.


Czech clubs have won EuroLeague Women titles – Brno Gambrinus in 2006 and USK Praha in 2015.


Switzerland qualified for the Women`s EuroBasket 2025 for the first time since 1956.


Swiss champion Elfic Fribourg posted a 3-3 record at the 2025 EuroCup Women, Group D.


Ostrava hosted the 2010 Women`s World Cup together with Brno and Karlovy Vary.


Lausanne, Switzerland will host the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup for Men on June 28-July 6.


The Internation Basketball federation was founded on June 18, 1932, in Geneva by: Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland.
