Smutna and Squires make it rain, SBŠ Ostrava surprise Nyon Basket

SBŠ Ostrava showed one of the most impressive performances from the three point line to beat a Swiss Supercup holder Nyon Basket, 88-76, on Sunday, October 27, at the Hala Ostravská univerzita.

Adela Smutna had a huge game and scored 24 points for SBŠ Ostrava.


A former Northwest College shooting guard went 6/8 from the three point line – just two makes short from tying an EWBL record.


Oliana Squires followed with 16 points on 6/12 shooting from the field and 4/7 from the deep.


Montana State University star grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists.


Center Iva Beloševič had 14 points, four assists and one block.


Miriam Uro-Nilie answered with 21 points.


Ukraine international shot 9/18 from the field.


Shannon Coffee and Indira Vilolo Dos Santos scored 11 and 10 points respectively.



Key stats

SBŠ Ostrava scored 13 three pointers in 23 minutes for a 64-42 lead.


The hosts combined for 39 points from the three point line until then.


Eventually SBŠ Ostrava shot 15/28 from the deep – two field goals short from tying an EWBL record.


A three pointer by Miriam Uro-Nilie on assist from Belgian sharpshooter Marjorie Carpreaux cut the gap to nine points, 83-74, with 03.19 left.


Nikola Kovačikova replied with a three pointer to secure a double digit lead again, 86-74.


SBŠ Ostrava also outscored Nyon on fast breaks, 26-14.


The Swiss club scored more points in the paint, 30-46.

Game notes

SBŠ Ostrava improved to 1-0, while Nyon Basket dropped to 0-1.


Loan Morand and his squad suffered first defeat of the season after a 4-0 start at the SBLW.


Return match is scheduled on January 10, 2025 and it promises to be very exciting.


Iveta Raškova and her team are off to a strong start.
