Series preview: Rostov Don SFEDU vs Lulea Basket

Rostov Don SFEDU will face Lulea Basket in the Game One of the EWBL quarterfinal series on Sunday, February 10, at Rostov on Don. Tipoff at 17:00 local time.

What`s at stake?

Rostov Don SFEDU players have qualified for their first ever playoffs, while Lulea Basket will try to reach the Final Four with a second attempt.

 

Road to the playoffs

Lulea Basket had another strong regular season, posting five wins in the first six games. The Swedish champions traveled to Latvia twice to register four victories over the Amsterdam Angels (107:63), Dynamo Moscow (115:69), Kibirkštis Vilnius (83:53) and Horizont Minsk – 86:81.

A single loss was suffered against TTT Riga (63:98) on December 7 at Saulkrasti – small seaside town 40 kilometers north of the Latvian capital. Lulea Basket hosted two home games then to prevail over Žabiny Brno (75:66) and unexpectedly fall at the hands of the Pieštanske Čajky – 64:69.

Southern Federal University started its maiden campaing with three games in Grodno, Belarus. The Panthers beat the hosts Olimpia (88:74), lost against A3 Basket (69:82) and emerged victorious against the Astana Tigers – 66:61.

Rostov Don SFEDU won both home games on December 1-2. The Panthers prevailed over Young Angels Košice (79:71) and PINKK Pecsi (75:61) to enter 2019 with a 4-1 record. They added one more win at SBŠ Ostrava (86:75) and lost against the group winners Tsmoki Minsk – 66:67.

 

Domestic competitions

Lulea Basket has a 12-2 record at Damligan. They had a great 10-0 start, but suffered two consecutive losses in the last week of January. It started with a 80:88 home loss against Norrkoping Dolphins and continued with a 71-81 defeat at A3 Basket Umea.

The Swedish champions rebounded with a 91-59 success at Visby Ladies on Friday, February 8. Four players – Chastity Reed, Precious Hall, Michaela Houser and newcomer Antonija Sandrič – finished in double figures, while the Lithuanian center Kristina Alminaite chipped in eight points.

Rostov Don SFEDU has a 26-4 recond in the Russian First division (second best competition after Premier Leagua), trailing only to perfect Kazanochka Kazan (28-0).

First division features the farm teams of Dynamo Kursk, UMMC Yekaterinburg, Sparta&K and Moscow Basketball academy as well as Samara, Omsk, Siktyvkar, Vologda and Stavropol.

 

The leaders

Chastity Reed is the top scorer of the EWBL. She averages 22,0 points and 9,7 rebounds per game. Reed has finished in double figures in every game, including five 20 point games.

Allys Nystrom (two games), Precious Hall, Anna Barthold (four games), Michaela Houser and Chioma Nnamaka also average 10 or more points per game. Lulea has one of the most balanced attacks in competition.

Anna Zaitseva has registered 14,3 points and 6,7 rebounds per game for Rostov Don. Eleonora Oleynikova and Anastasiia Maksimova are well known double-digit finishers too.
