Meet the Fantastic Five: Žabiny build 34 point advantage over A3 Basket

Katerina Zohnova, Justina Matuzonyte, Petra Zaplatova, Michaela Vackova and Marques Webb combined for a 94 points to lift Žabiny Brno over A3 Basket 97-63 on Saturday, February 2, at Hala Rosnička. Second game is scheduled on February 13 at Umea.

Players of the game

Viktor Prusa knew that A3 Basket is coming to Brno after a key win in Damligan over the perennial archrivals Lulea Basket. He used a seven player rotation to achieve a fantastic result in Game One.

Everyone contributed.

Brno produced some ming boggling numbers – five (!) players scored 16 and more (!) points.

Marques Webb, Justina Matuzonyte and Petra Zaplatova posted 35 points in the first half but it was far from over.

Katerina Zohnova and Michaela Vackova stepped up to score 31 of their 40 points in the second half.

When you got production like that, the opponent team is doomed – at least for the first 40 minutes. However, it`s not over yet.

Zohnova was particularly impressive – she had 19 points in the second half alone to finish with a game high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Point guard Petra Zaplatova followed with 21 points, including another 8-of-8 performance from the charity stripe.

Marqu`es Webb (Vanderbilt) was huge under the basket. She posted 16 points and 17 rebounds for a game high efficiency rating of 27.

Finally, Lithuania international Justina Matuzonyte and Michaela Vackova added 17 points each.

Tiffany Brown (Georgia Southern) and Tayler Mingo (Wright State) answered with 19 and 17 points respectively.

Key stats

Three Brno players – Webb, Zaplatova and Matuzonyte – scored in double figures to give their team a 19 point lead 46-27 at halftime.

Brno used balanced scoring all 40 minutes to increase the lead up to 34 points.

A3 Basket players looked tired and out of focus due to Thursday`s battle with Lulea Basket.

Tiffany Brown scored 16 points in the first half while her teammated added just 13 points.

Hollie Mershon (Drexel) went on 2-of-13 shooting from the field after excellent game two days ago. Most of her teammates were cold too.

A3 Basket has another 40 minutes at home to dig itself out of the hole.
