Grodno survives to fight another day

Olimpia Grodno earned a huge 78-67 win over Young Angels Košice to keep the qualifying hopes alive on Saturday, January 5, at the Angels Arena in Košice, Slovakia.

Natallia Dashkevich shined bright like a diamond. She scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds for a efficiency rating of 25.

Dashkevich connected 7-of-15 shots from the field but, most important, added 11 points from the free throw line.

Yuliya Vasilevich had 14 points, including 90% accuracy from the charity stripe (9/10).

Darya Mahalias scored 10 points, while Nadzeya Nadzezhka added six points, 12 rebounds and four steals.

Denisa Blanarova led the Young Angels with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Samantha Rae Logic (University of Iowa 2015) contributed with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.


Key stats

The Young Angels won the second and fourth quarters but were outscored in the third quarter by 11 points 11-22.

Grodno players stormed the paint and earned the rights to shoot 47 (!) free throws. They made 35 of them, while the Angels connected 15-of-19 attempts.

The Angels scored 28 points in fastbreaks, compared to 10 points for Olimpia.

Grodno is one win away from the playoffs. The club from Belarus may afford to lose if the Angels drop their encounter against A3 Basket.
